Chain Reaction

It was Norman’s birthday during the week, but he wanted the girls there so delayed celebrating until the Friday. Then Lily ended up going back to George but we had Josh standing in. Our friends Greg, Retha and Pierre also joined us. We went to the new venue Cheyne’s in Hout Bay. We took a huge group there when they opened and the food was amazing and we have wanted to go back since, we just had not managed to get there somehow.

The food was every bit as wonderful as I remember. I had the crayfish tempura to start, described on Cheyne’s Facebook page as
CRAYFISH TEMPURA, MISO, QP MAYO, GARLIC CHIVE WONTON, WILD CHIVE FLOWER, SAUCE SHUMAI
Most of the table had this dish.
My bad photography skills do not do this one justice, it is amazing!! The different little bits to add flavor, the density of the crayfish nestled in the crispy tempura batter- just mouthwatering.

Norm had the beef, described as:
BEEF TATAKI, MISO, MIRIN AND ENGLISH MUSTARD, TEMPURA ONION CROWN which was so tender it would melt in your mouth. Really beautiful. He only allowed me a tiny bite.

For my main I had the lemon and edemame flavoured risotto with pan fried tiger prawns. The risotto is one of the best I have ever had, very creamy in texture and incredibly rich in flavour it was just divine! It came with a little potato whipped and fried concoction which tasted so light and crunchy with the outside crispy and the middle a creamy like purée. Just amazing. Half of our table had the risotto and prawns and all enjoyed it.

The other half had the laksa:
MALAYSIAN LAKSA, GRILLED LINEFISH AND TIGER PRAWNS, WARM CUCUMBER NOODLES, NORI DUST.

It is lovely too I tried it when we went there when Cheyne opened. The flavours are fabulous.

Norm had the lamb which was presented beautifully.

We decided to push the boat put as it was a special occasion and have dessert.

Norm had the 70% DARK CHOCOLATE, SALTED PRALINE PASTE, CITRUS TEXTURES

It was incredibly rich, I would not have been able to manage it but chocolate and orange is Norms fave and he wolfed it down.

I had the apple pie as did Caitlin. It was described on the menu as FRIED APPLE PIE, KAYA PASTE, STICKY MISO, SOUR CREAM ICE CREAM.

It was so yummy!

The pastry was so light and crisp, the centre hot and tangy apple in a toffee type filling. The ice cream was fresh and light. Really beautiful and not so rich and heavy as I had a very rich starter and main.

The service was impeccable, topping up the water for all and the delicious La Motte Sauvignon Blanc throughout. Josh was the designated driver so Norm could enjoy the evening.

We had an amazing night, the music was fabulous, to me it is so easy to get that wrong as i am very fussy, but the music was vibey, energetic yet relaxing. The decor is charming and simple, the food perfection. I strongly recommend you give it a try.
